Hearing Aid Fitting
The hearing aid fitting process – from fitting to follow-up
The hearing aid you chose during the hearing aid evaluation will be preprogrammed and verified to be working well before you fitting appointment. The first part of the fitting appointment is verification where a real-ear-measure will be recorded. This is a simple and quick measurement that will verify that the hearing aid gain matches your hearing loss frequency by frequency. After verifying the hearing aid is set perfectly for your hearing loss the overall volume will be decreased from your full prescription. By decreasing the overall volume this allows you to notice an improvement in your hearing but also gives you time to get used to hearing more sounds without those sounds being overwhelming.
After programming the hearing aid for you, you will then be taught how to care for your new devices. You will learn how to insert and remove the hearing devices from your ears. Remember this is your first time and there is a lot of information to cover, be patient with yourself.
Lastly the hearing aid contract will be gone over with you. The contract will show you the price, the hearing aid, and the trial period. California has a 45 day trial period. That means if during the trial period on your contract you decide for any reason that you do not want the hearing aids, you can return the devices and your deposit will be refunded.
During the trial period you will have multiple appointments. During these appointments the hearing aids will be adjusted based on your experiences wearing the devices. Typically the first follow-up appointment is two weeks after the fitting appointment. If for any reason you are unable to wear the hearing aids, you should contact us.
After the trial is over, you will be scheduled for an appointment about 4 months later. This appointment is to verify you are still doing well with the hearing aids and make any changes to the programming. You should expect 2-4 appointments per year. Luckily all of these appointments are at no cost if you bought the hearing aids from us and have an updated hearing test.
Basic troubleshooting
- Change the battery
* Are you remembering to open the battery door at night? - Is there any earwax blocking covering the devices?
* It is important to keep your devices clean. Never use household cleaners, water, or oil. A dry cloth is the best way to wipe any debris off.
